Speech to Text

STT Reporting

Speech-to-Text is a verbatim service facilitating communication between deaf/deafened/hard of hearing people and hearing people, with the emphasis on "verbatim".

Around the UK and, indeed, all over the world are a pool of highly skilled and accredited Stenographers and Palantypists who take down the spoken word on a special Palantype or Stenograph keyboard which is then simultaneously translated into English and displayed for the reader to view and follow on an equal footing to their hearing colleagues.

Text is typed using either a Stenograph or Palantype keyboard whereby chords of letters are pressed (stroked) in a sequence at speeds of up to 250 words per minute and sometimes faster.

This service is vital for those attending meetings and conferences and who need access to the written word.  The service can be provided on site or, due to the advances in technology, the service can sometimes be provided remotely via the Internet, phone lines and Skype.

STT Reporters should not be confused with SpeedText Operators or Electronic Notetakers as the two perform entirely different functions.  They use an ordinary QWERTY keyboard and cannot type at the same speed as spoken language, only producing a précis of what is said whereas the STT Reporter is making a verbatim record, i.e., taking down every word.
